Cherokee Triangle Art Fair 2013

Cherokee Pkwy in the Spring... Can't beat it
Cherokee Pkwy in the Spring… Can’t beat it

As you may have noticed, it’s that time again in Louisville, KY.  The weather has already shown us a few days in the 70 degree temperature range and people are itching.  It is time for the gnarliest 2 weeks in our great city.  I am talking about Kentucky Derby Festival and all of the sweet events that go with it.  I really enjoy just about every Kentucky Derby Festival event, however there are some that stay a little closer to my heart than others.

Growing up in the Highlands / Cherokee Triangle, and now still living there, I always look forward to walking to the Cherokee Triangle Art Fair.  Although it is not actually a Kentucky Derby Festival event, The Cherokee Triangle Art Fair always takes place the weekend before the Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks on Cherokee Pkwy between the Castleman statue and Willow Park.  This year it falls on April 27th and 28th.  Each year artists setup their display booths to showcase and sell their artwork for the huge crowds that visit the 2-day event.  Over 200 different booths will take over Cherokee Pkwy for the weekend and, besides purchasing artwork, this is a great place to meet and network with the artists themselves.  Cherokee Triangle Art Fair is a free event open to the public with plenty of food and beverage available for purchase, as well as fun, free activities for the kids in the children’s tent, and even some live music!  It opens each day at 10:00 am and finishes at 6:00pm (food and drink continues to 8:00pm on Saturday).  They ask that you leave your pets, roller blades (or skates), and skateboards at home; and if you choose to ride your bike TO the event, please do not ride your bike THROUGH the event.

The Cherokee Triangle Art fair is the largest annual fundraiser for the Cherokee Triangle Association.  The proceeds are used to help fund a variety of different neighborhood events and needs from parkway beautification to summer concert events in Willow Park, to library donations and Olmsted Parks funding.  Whether you’re a fan of Kentucky Derby Festival events or not, the Cherokee Triangle Art Fair offers something for everyone.  What a great time to walk through the Highlands and enjoy the spring air!
