Here we go! The “official / unofficial” kickoff to the Kentucky Derby Festival is upon us. Thunder Over Louisville, the largest fireworks display in North America (and most other places), takes place tomorrow, April 20th, 2013. If you like fireworks, you will most likely enjoy this amazing display of bridges exploding, barges in the Ohio river exploding, buildings exploding…ok I made that last part up.
From now until May 4th, which is the 139th running of the Kentucky Derby, there will be more insanity in the city of Louisville than you can handle. Kentucky Derby Festival Events happen all day, every day and there is something for everyone. Thunder Over Louisville itself is an all day event. The great lawn opens at 9:00am, and the air show begins at 3:00pm, which is a really cool thing to see. In the past we have seen aerial demonstrations from Blue Angels and Stealth bombers, to single engine planes that can do just about anything, to classic planes that are reminiscent of a ’57 Chevy…but it’s an airplane. Thunder Over Louisville Air Show is also a great place to take the kids! There’s all sorts of stuff to do on the great lawn for kids and grown-ups!
The fireworks begin around 9:30 pm, and the entire show is synchronized to music. Now that the Big Four pedestrian bridge is open to the public, I would be willing to bet that there will be quite a few people watching from there (unless they have plans to blow it up too). Go for the whole day, go for half, or watch it in HD from your living room, but either way Thunder Over Louisville, and the Thunder Over Louisville air show make for an incredible day in the city of Louisville. Come out and kick off the 139th running of The Kentucky Derby with style! See you downtown Louisville on the great lawn!
