There has been a lot of speculation over the last couple of years that one of the most attended and most recognized events during the Kentucky Derby Festival, the great steamboat race, would be falling by the wayside soon. The former Belle of Louisville rival, the Delta Queen, was retired five or six years ago, and it has become somewhat difficult to find another working steamboat for our Belle of Louisville to race. Have no fear, we are good for at least another year as this year we battle the Belle of Cincinnati. For the history on this Kentucky Derby Festival event you can read last year’s Great Steamboat Race post.
All you need to know this year is that it is happening, and there are still tickets available for riding aboard either one of the vessels. You can purchase tickets here. If you are not going to be ON one of the steamboats, but you would like to cheer on the Belle of Louisville, you can do so from just about anywhere on the waterfront! Bring the kids, the dogs, friends, enemies, or just come by yourself ready to jam! The 2014 Great Steamboat Race takes place on Wednesday, April 30th with the actual race beginning at 6:00 pm.
This is just another awesome Kentucky Derby Festival event that gets us excited to be one step closer to the most exciting two minutes in sports!
