Always a party favorite and usually a part of your sporting event spread, chicken wings have certainly proven themselves as a hot item for entertaining. This fine finger food has also taken on several different forms in the restaurant world: from sweet to spicy to tangy to smokey, some wings are grilled, some are fried, some are smoked, some are baked. A chicken wing is a chicken wing until you decide how you want to prepare it. Some Louisville restaurants are known for their wings and others stay under the radar, but no matter how you like your wings, we have a variety of styles and flavors in Louisville that can fit every chicken wing flavor profile out there. I recently asked my Facebook friends where their favorite wings in Louisville are. I saw people mention a lot of my favorites , but I gotta be honest, there were a couple of places that I had never tried before. Here’s what I think:
Momma’s Pickles, Mustard, and BBQ | St Matthews & Hurstbourne
If you missed my mention of this hot spot in my earlier BBQ post, you need to check it out. Not only is their BBQ delightful, they create some of the best wings in the city! Momma’s wings come dry rubbed and smoked, and they have more flavor than you can even imagine on an un-sauced wing. Could you use some of Momma’s delicious homemade BBQ sauce on them? Sure, but it’s not necessary because the flavor is already huge without a sauce.
Saints Pizza and Pub | St Matthews
Recently, Saints pub added smokers to their list of cooking devices in order to create new smoked items for their menu. That addition has proven to be an excellent maneuver to an already solid menu. Saints uses a homemade dry rub on their wings before they go in the smoker, and before they come to your table, they are baked, which means that these Louisville wings never touch a frier. Where Momma’s dry rub tastes a lot like Chicken/Ribs, Saints dry rub is more like Chicken/Bacon. Saints’ wings are super juicy and full of flavor. Other than their homemade apple cider vinegar BBQ sauce, there’s a buffalo sauce, and my personal favorite, the Halo sauce, which is a spicy-sweet gold BBQ that is absolutely fantastic.
Frankfort Ave Beer Depot | Crescent Hill
Last but not least of the best smoked wings in Louisville is the local favorite, F.A.B.D, or Frankfort Avenue Beer Depot. With the smokers going full steam in the front parking lot, it’s hard to ignore this spot, especially if you’re driving by. While you can’t go wrong with any of the delicious menu items here, the smokehouse wings are a must! And of course, the legendary homemade BBQ sauce goes great with everything. One of the many reasons that F.A.B.D has stood the test of time in Louisville.
The Back Door | Highlands
Switching gears out of the smoke and into the buffalo-style chicken wing, The Back Door makes one of Louisville’s best wings. I grew up across the street from this place and never knew how delicious their wings were until 2014. I guess it’s better late than never. This local watering hole is one of the friendliest pubs in our city with a lounge-type atmosphere.
Spring Street Bar and Grill | Clifton / Irish Hill
Another one of Louisville’s finest wings comes from Spring Street Bar and Grill on the corner of Payne St and South Spring St. When you order wings here, they come HOT and SPICY with a side of bleu cheese and celery. If you can’t handle the heat, mild sauce is available upon request. These wings are a delicious mess, so get napkins!
Rumors | Middletown
Home of fresh shellfish and Buffalo style chicken wings, Rumors in Middletown has a simple, delicious wing. They only need four or five sauces to choose from because these are true Buffalo wings. I get hot. Extra hot is delicious, but a bit too spicy for me these days. With the beachy atmosphere and fresh oysters on the half shell, Rumors has quite a bit to offer for the Louisville wing lover.
Roosters | Multiple Locations
Roosters has a few locations in Kentucky, Indiana, West Virginia, and a bunch of locations in Ohio. They have a delicious wing with a variety of tasty sauces for the sauce lover. My personal favorites include Donkey, Sweet Thai Chili, and Garlic. This place is all about wings, and it has a nice presence here in Louisville!
