Someone told me one time that “sushi is sushi.” This was clearly a rookie comment and not one of a seasoned veteran with any type of food knowledge. Yeah, I’m sure “sushi is sushi” when the only sushi you eat is a California Roll. No offense to the Cali Roll or its fans, I like California Rolls too, but that’s a sushi starter kit. When you get into the dragon rolls, the spicy wizard rolls, and pretty much anything involving eel, you will come to find out that all sushi is not created equally. So, where can you find some of the best sushi in Louisville? Well, my criteria for falling into this category has multiple facets: 1> Quality – It has to be fresh. My sushi must not contain “imitation” anything. 2> Diversity – I need a few creative, house-specialty rolls to eat and some specialty sake on the menu. 3> Atmosphere – An inviting atmosphere just makes everything else better. Here are the sushi restaurants in Louisville that bring all these things together nicely.
Sapporo | 1706 Bardstown Rd | Highlands
Sapporo brings the most creative, most diverse menu, and the best atmosphere. Located in the Highlands, this modern Louisville sushi restaurant is at the top of my list for a lot of reasons. The location is tough to beat, the space is very hip and brings with it a great atmosphere, and the staff is attentive and knowledgeable. Sapporo also has Hibachi tables, and a nice sake list. This place is well-rounded and perfect for a quick bite, or date night.
Sake Blue | 9326 Cedar Center Way | Fern Creek
Not only is the sushi at Sake Blue some of the best in Louisville, but the presentation is incredible. You can get the Dynamite Roll or the Snow Roll and be completely satisfied. These classics are done right. However, you can also step into the specialty realm and check out the Sake Blue Signature Roll, which is served on a flaming plate! It’s located in a strip mall off of Bardstown Rd near I-265, but don’t let that fool you. The atmosphere at Sake Blue is great! They also have hibachi tables.
Oishii | 2810 Taylorsville Rd | Highlands
Formerly located across from the Douglass Loop, Oishii decided to expand their location and move to the edge of the Highlands across from Bowman Field. They needed the space. After all, the food is top notch and the tiny spot on Bardstown Rd just wouldn’t cut it anymore. You cannot beat the quality and price of this sushi. Open for lunch and dinner, this has become a go-to for awesome Louisville Sushi.
Asahi | 3701 Lexington Rd | St Matthews
With specialties like the Kentucky Roll and the Asahi Roll, and classics like the Volcano Roll and the Yum Yum Roll, Asahi has a well-rounded menu. They are conveniently located in the heart of St Matthews, and open for lunch and dinner, with a small break in the middle. The store is light and bright, and there are sake and beer specials at certain times of day. You should definitely put Asahi on your list of Louisville sushi greats!
Sakura Blue | 4600 Shelbyville Rd #118 | St Matthews
Located next to Trader Joe’s in the Shlebyville Rd Plaza, Sakura Blue brings a very traditional look and feel to your sushi or hibachi experience. The sushi is freshly prepared right in front of you and the hibachi chefs are hilarious. This is my tried and true sushi spot in Louisville. The atmosphere might not be as fancy as some of the others on this list, but the food speaks for itself and needs no additional frills.
There are plenty of sushi restaurants in Louisville that will make you happy. These are just a few of them, but they are guaranteed to please. Try them all!
